In 2012, when LYTRO’s founder Dr. Ren Ng introduced light field photography to the world, the tech industry took notice. In a mere two years’ time, competitors have caught up with LYTRO’s ingenious “living pictures” function. Applications like FocusTwist by ARQBALL, Lens Blur by Google, even built-in features on Samsung Galaxy S5 and others have the ability to let you alter the depth of field in a photo. However, LYTRO is aiming to retake the throne with its new LYTRO Illum camera. Unlike the original LYTRO camera, which resembles a kaleidoscope, the new LYTRO Illum is in actual shape of a camera. Packed with 13 lens elements and a zoom range of 30 to 250 mm, the Illum is in the same league as DSLR cameras produced by Canon and Nikon. But because of its cutting edge software and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 processor, the Illum weighs around a pound and a half only. Since light field photography operates differently from a traditional digital camera, image sensors are measured in megaray instead of megapixel. For the Illum, LYTRO bundled it with a custom-made 40-megaray light field sensor plus an easy to operate 4-inch touchscreen display.

  • 40-Megaray Light Field Image Sensor
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Processor
  • 8x Optical Zoom (30mm-250mm Equivalent)
  • f/2.0 Aperture
  • High-Speed Shutter (1/4000s)
  • 4-Inch Touchscreen Display

Retails for $1,599 USD, the LYTRO Illum will be available starting on July 15th. LYTRO is also giving early adopters a chance to try the new camera for a pre-order price of $1,499 USD.
