Google Smart Contact Lens Project 01 Google Smart Contact Lens Project

Wearable tech was all the rage at this year’s International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Unfortunately, most devices on display lacked any practical applications and beyond the reach of your average consumers. Enters Google which just announced it Smart Contact Lens Project. Devised by Googlers Brian Otis and Babak Parviz, the project envisions miniature glucose sensor between two layers of soft contact lens material. Thinner than the width of a human hair, the sensor detects blood sugar levels through the user’s tears in real time than transmit the data points via a wireless antenna. With diabetes affecting one in every 19 people in the world today, Google hopes this new device will do away the need for diabetics to apply the painful “prick” test. While the project is still in its infancy, Otis and Parviz already created a prototype that can read blood sugar level every second. The researchers are also in talks with FDA and partners within the medical establishments so they can expedite the process once the lens are ready for clinical trials in the near future.
