The one-of-a-kind Leica M (RED) camera took two years to design and featured a die-cast magnesium and anodized aluminum build, as well as a 50mm f2.0 lens. But what really set this camera apart was a special inscription, which read “Designed by Jony Ive & Marc Newson for (RED) 2013 edition 01/01.” Consequently, the beautifully appointed piece was initially expected to fetch $500,000 to $750,000 when it hit the (RED) auction at Sotheby’s, which took place in New York this past Saturday. Instead, the camera sold for a jaw-dropping $1,805,000.
